Men From Behind

Men From Behind was a performance workshop with artist Paul Hughes that looked at the (de)gendering of penetration as masculine and penetrability as feminine.

Inspired by The Penetrated Male by writer Jonathan Kemp, 10 artists from different art forms and backgrounds met at ]performance space[ in Folkestone to consider how to shift the binary of penetration from ‘masculine / feminine’ to neither / nor’ using live performance, and how to situate this potentially obscene figure in public.

“What Gareth and Paul are proposing… represents an invaluable opportunity to generate both art and community, to establish networks of support and care, and to locate a site for the creation of new queer connections and artistic traditions.” – participant feedback

The workshop was kindly supported by Live Art Development Agency and ]performance space[ as part of DIY Gateway, supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
